Dominican Republic is served by a number of airlines such as Air France, Corsair, Iberia (via Madrid), Air Europa, Martinair, American Airlines (via Miami or New York) et US Airways (via Philadelphia), Continental Airlines, etc.. We recommend flying into Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo or El Catey if your final destination is Las Terrenas. We advise against flying into Punta Cana as this implies a further 8 hour journey by road or expensive private internal flights.
Getting to Las Terrenas from Puerto Plata
The easiest way to reach Las Terrenas from Puerto Plata is to take a taxi (air conditioned). Flights are generally scheduled to arrive into Puerto Plata in the afternoon and you can be in Las Terrenas by evening. The journey takes around 3½ hours and costs approximately US $ 160 *.
Getting to Las Terrenas from El Catey
By taxi (air conditioned). The journey takes around 40 minutes and costs approximately US $ 50*.
Getting to Las Terrenas from Santo Domingo
The majority of international flights into Santo Domingo are scheduled to arrive late evening. Las Terrenas is a 2½ hour drive from the airport which can be very tiring after a long haul flight and there are no internal flights available at that hour to get you to Las Terrenas.
Whether you choose to travel by taxi or internal flight, we recommend you spend your first night in Santo Domingo and enjoy the evening discovering the myriad of charming little streets and restaurants to be found in the historical center known as the “Colonial Area”. Chose from the selection of hotels in Santo Domingo below.
By road: taxi or bus.
•If travelling by taxi, you have two options. Coming straight to Las Terrenas from the international airport means you´ll arrive late evening (2½ hour journey costing approximately US $ 180*). Should you decide to overnight in Santo Domingo then a 30 minute taxi ride costing approximately US $ 35 will get you to the city center. The journey to Las Terrenas the following day takes 3 hours (private air conditioned taxi for max 6 persons)..
•By bus. is the cheapest option. You will have to overnight in Santo Domingo as there is no bus service at night and reach the bus station the next day. Contact us for the bus time tables.Seats cannot be booked. The bus does not go directly to Las Terrenas but to Sánchez (18km away) and the rest of the journey is by ’guagua’ (local transport).
By air: scheduled and charter flights.
Having spent your first night in Santo Domingo, take a taxi to La Isabela domestic airport to the east of the city where you can catch a scheduled inland flight. It´s just a 30 minute flight to El Portillo, the local airport 4 km from Las Terrenas. The flight across the island is breathtaking ! !
•Scheduled flights: La Isabela/El Portillo 10.00 am and 4.00 pm daily.Cost: US $ 80 per person one way. Half price for children under 8 years.
•Charter flights: Available from La Isabela domestic airport and from Las Americas international airport. Note that the El Portillo air strip is not lit up and incoming flights are allowed up to sunset only (6.00 pm approximately).
* Rates are approximate and can change according to the peso/dollar exchange rate and fuel costs.
Renting a car during your stay in Las Terrenas means you candiscover the SamanaPeninsula and the rest of the country at your own pace. For further information on rates or to book a vehicle please contact us.
We are also happy to book any of the excursions in the area. for you. For Whale Watching with Kim Beddall (January to end of March only) we strongly advise you to book well in advance of your stay in Las Terrenas due to the great demand and limited places on the boat.
